Our season opens with a “show biz” production. It’s 1939 in Hollywood, and legendary producer David O. Selznick has shut down production of his new epic film Gone With the Wind. The director has been fired and the screenplay is…awful! But Selznick has a vision and he is determined to get this picture made. He calls in screenwriter Ben Hecht (who hasn’t read the book) and pulls director Victor Fleming from the set of The Wizard of Oz to collaborate. Comedy and chaos ensue as the three men, locked in Selznick’s office, subsisting on a diet of bananas and peanuts (and aided by the indomitable Miss Poppenghul who fields phone calls from stars, gossip columnists, and in-laws) labor for five days and nights crafting the screenplay for one of the most successful and beloved films of all time.
